US Disabled Sailor Newsletter Launched
IFDS World Championships Scheduled for August 6 - 12, 1998

WE Magazine sponsors disabled sailing!  In an exciting move, this new disabilities magazine has taken an enormous interest in disabled sailing!  Matt Belsin, an editor of WE has recently attended the US Trials for the World Championships, traveled to SAL-Miami, and spent three days in Newport for the IFDS World Disabled Championships!  All the sailors were thrilled to see WE, and no one could have missed the huge yellow spinnakers flown by USA1 and USA2 on their way to the racecourse one morning.  We look forward to working closely with WE in the months ahead, and to seeing continued coverage of US and World Disabled Sailing!  If you would like more information on WE, or to get a subscription for yourself or a friend, contact them through their website at www.wemagazine.com!

Sailing Alternatives receives the 2nd Annual Accessibility Award from the City of St. Petersburg Committee to Advocate for People with Impairments (C.A.P.I)!  CAPI's first award went to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays - and we are pleased to receive their 1998 award.  CAPI has been working closely with Sailing Alternatives over the past year to increase accessibility at the St. Petersburg facility.

CAPI Award Presentation

Here is (l-r) Charlie Williams and George Murray from CAPI, Gene Hinkel, Serge Jorgensen, and John Jorgensen from Sailing Alternatives.  The City kindly informed us beforehand that sailing clothes would not be acceptable - and Gene, Serge, and John managed to dust off some suits.

The US Disabled Sailor is launched as the first national newsletter for disabled sailing.  If you haven't seen a copy and would like to, or if you have something to contribute, send us some mail and give us your name, address, and whatever information you have about your disabled sailing program.  The USDS is edited by Linda Merkle, PRO for the 1996 Paralympics, and is published by Sailing Alternatives, Inc. in cooperation with US SAILING.  Over 700 copies are mailed to disabled sailors and programs around the country.  If you would like to add your club to the mailing list, or would like to advertise in the USDS, send some mail to webmaster@sailingalternatives.org and we will be happy to help you out.
