Going upwind in an Illusion

Our Basic and Advanced Sailing Instruction is offered by our US Sailing certified instructors on a monthly basis.

Courses normally begin the first Monday of every month, and continue for four consecutive weeks.  Classroom sessions are Monday nights, followed by water sessions over the weekend.

These sailing courses are designed for people, whatever their abilities, to learn to sail.  Courses use Illusions, 2.4 mRs, and Rhodes 19s to teach and test your skills.  The four week program is meant to successfully bring a student with no prior knowledge of sailing to the point where they can navigate a 19 foot boat from the St. Petersburg Sailing Center to Tampa Bay, enjoy an afternoon of sailing, and return safely to the dock.  Small class sizes allow much flexibility for those with more advanced skills, or for those who want to take things at a slower pace.

All of our courses have some distinctive trademarks that separate us from your normal sailing school.   These include:

  • Small class sizes of 3 - 6 students
  • Individual boats for each student
  • Two-way radios for communication between instructor and students
  • Flexible schedules designed to meet your needs
  • Instructors and volunteers trained to overcome any obstacles that would prevent you from accessing the water.

What better way to spend a weekend afternoon than
sailing your boat across the waters of Tampa Bay?

As you can see, even our single-person boats have both a main and jib, adjustable backstay, traveler, and many other pieces of equipment that work to provide the same feel as a boat much larger. What you can not see is the 350 pounds of lead ballast to prevent the boat from capsizing, the adaptable foot or hand steering controls, the optional spinnaker equipment for more advanced sailing, and the smile on the helmsman's face.

Next class begins April 25th.  Contact Don Horsman to sign up.
